Something I have thought of since we began this site is a joint online show of some kind. Since you are working on some new flowers, and I have a few in progress of my own, I think that might be a good theme for this show: flower sculptures. I think the contrast between your elegant and polished flowers and mine that are a little more rough would make for an interesting show.
The ones I’m working on now incorporate all sorts of found elements - rusty metal pieces, bits of old tools, steel tacks, etc. I have approx. 12 done now, although my intent is to release a set of 25 “rejected” flowers, the “rejected” referring to their deviance from the “standard” flower I’ve settled on. I envision these as early prototypes or perhaps mutants.
I think we could show some online (5 each?), 5 in Des Moines, and 5 in Portland. Maybe that’s too many. I’m not sure where the flowers might be shown here, but I bet I can work something out given enough notice. Assume you could do the same there?
What do you think?

I think it sounds like an interesting idea. It would be nice if we could somehow get some galleries to check it out.
I have been e-mailing galleries outside of Des Moines and have been getting some different responses. Some say that my flowers are too traditional and some say that they are not traditional enough. Criticism can be hard to swallow. Hopefully it is just about finding the right gallery.
I think we should do the online show. Would we present it as part of the blog roll or would it be a different site that people could link to from DA?

I think your flowers would be a big hit at the Northwest Woodworking store in Seattle that I posted about the other day. Maybe you should try them out. There is a similar store in Portland that I’ve never been to.
I think we can put the joint show on Descending Ashtray, perhaps at a different link like descendingashtray.com/flowers/ or something. We can link to it from the home page and maybe I will make up some ads to place under the navigation on the right side of the page. I think the design could be a little more unique than this blog template, too.
Would you want to sell your flowers?

I am not sure if selling them on line would be as good as finding galleries. It might be better for me to sell through galleries instead of competing with them. What do you think?
Do you think the show should be a changing thing that we could update or do you think there should be a set time period to show selected works?

I don’t know. I think that’s up for discussion, whether or not it’d be an ongoing thing. I guess I’d do it once and see how it goes.
I think you’d need to set prices for the pieces and just make sure that was the price the galleries were selling them for as well. On the plus side, you’d get 100% of the proceeds, instead of the percentage you’d get after the gallery takes their cut.
I think it’d be cool to have galleries AND online. This is a web site - you can’t just send people to the gallery if they live in France and the gallery is in Iowa.

That is a good point. Maybe we should set up some sort of show room where we can post things that are new or for sale. If the whole world is at our finger tips why not?

Not that I plan to sell a lot of freedom flowers in France. ;)

This is some good discussion.
So, let’s try it out for this one time and see how that goes. Shall we start with 5 and 5 online and go from there, or should we pursue the gallery idea first? For me, the online show is easier, but … it might be good for me to attempt to expand my sphere of comfort, too.
Probably it would be easier to get gallery shows with sample of the work on offer, though. How likely is it that a gallery would show both sets?
