Since we were fortunate enough to be included in the 9rules network (formal acceptance pending), I think this might be a good time to step back and take stock of the site.
I am very happy with the level of participation … the number and quality of the posts has far exceeded my expectations, and I think as we continue to write, I think we will improve even more.
Still, there is always room for improvement, and I’d like to open the floor for discussion.
What is missing from Descending Ashtray? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? Any thoughts on the design/layout?

Those are good questions. Lately I have been doing so much work on the house and my shop has moved a couple of times that sculpture has been put on the backburner for a while. But things are changing and I am getting more organized.
I would like to start posting more sculptures and perhaps have a showroom that people could reference work that is for sale.
But do we want to market our work through this Blog?
The latest news has begun to hit me and I am realizing more and more that I need to really get things rolling “art/money” wise? Even though it goes against my concept last year, (it is hard to pay bills with drawings) I would like to achieve enough success that I can live off of my art and support a family. I feel that I am heading in that direction but it is going to take a lot of work.

I guess my real question is, “is this just a hobby or is this site a tool for our artist progress? Or maybe it is our art?

RE: This site: I think it is a motivator. I used to read letters that artists had written one another and think, wow, no one will have anything to read from my life since I don’t keep a diary or correspond much … but I think this site is serving that purpose for me, as a document, but also as a way of keeping my energy up. It’s gotten me more in the habit of working on art regularly. I know that at least you are keeping tabs on my progress. I feel like it’s caused me to explore more, for sure.

I have thought that I will probably market my own work more through daveselden.com if I ever get back to updating that.
But … I do think we should try a show on this site. I think this is a good place for a joint show.
For marketing your work, maybe another web site? As you can see, it’s pretty easy to manage the content using WordPress. Check out John Davis’ web site (sidebar links) for some inspiration. It’s simple, but nice.

What happened to Phil and your sister? Did we alienate our readers? ;)

I am not sure, I have not heard from Phil in a while. My sister has been pretty busy.
Another question, does the blog live on forever? What is Descending Ashtray going to be like ten years from now?
What about video? Can we add short films to the site?

Do we need to set a deadline for the joint show?

I love this site, so as long as you keep the really great content coming I think you can keep it the same. But I’m a fairly new subscriber, so nothing you have here is stale to me.
