Spent most of the day yesterday working on this piece inspired by one of the last flowers I did. Ended up using some copper discs that were scrap from another sculpture I did a few years ago. The discs were pieces left from the hole saw I used to cut a copper sheet, and were essentially circles with a hole drilled in the middle.
When I first completed this yesterday, I wasn’t very happy with it, but it is growing on me a little looking at it again today.
I burnt the base as before, but tried some spray laquer on it to seal the carbon-laden surface, which although awfully shiny, did seal the surface quite well. Have to play some more with that technique.
The base is approximately 9 inches square, 5 inches tall with flowers included.

A good exploration of the dimension possibilities. How would you display it? On a wall or sitting somewhere?
When you were burning the piece, did you find it hard to keep it from catching on fire?

I had originally thought of it as a “pedestal piece,” but I think it might be better as a wall hanging. It’s kind of cool the effect the flowers have as you move right to left. The different planes shift at different rates.
It was pretty easy to control the flames, but as you can see in the top photo, it was impossible to burn the corner where the edge of one level meets the surface of the next. At first I liked this effect, but now I’m not so keen on it.
I also think the flowers are too tall for the piece, or not tall enough. Tough to lengthen them, easy enough to pound them in a little more.
