Day 19 »

Junction Carving

Basswood, roughed out with table saw, drill press and router, approx. 5 in. tall. Really just another study for 2 larger versions I am working on (in plaster, and in pine). I didn’t realize how many studies I’ve been doing for this project. It had better be good when I’m all done.

Nice woodwork. It is interesting to think about how it is basicly a cube that has been minimized to simply being support for the holes. Have you thought of having a machinist manufacture 125 of those pieces for you?

How do you go about having a machinist make something like that? Isn’t it really expensive? Where do you find someone like that? What materials can they use?

I’d love to have some either cast really large, in bronze, too. I think 125 of these would be a great public sculpture. About 25 feet tall or so, and you could climb around inside and between each one.

My uncle teaches an autocad class in Omaha and he told me about this 3d printer that he had used before. Basicly you can design your part and print a 3d model which you can then use for the mold. But I don’t think that your joint would require such a procedure. Try looking around for any metal working shops.
