Giant Drill Press

Since it’s still too cold here to make it out to the shop, I thought I’d continue the “enormous tools” theme from yesterday.

Enormous Drill Press at the Brooklyn Train Yards in Portland, Oregon

Who is that skinny young guy?

In 2002, Sarah and I were lucky enough to get a guided tour of the Brooklyn Train Yards in Portland’s Brooklyn Neighborhood district. Currently a switching yard owned by the Union Pacific Railroad, the yard also features a full-size turntable used for turning whole locomotives around to move them in and out of the “roundhouse” for repairs. Now, the roundhouse is occupied by a local steam preservation group that is restoring several old engines. Hence the giant drill press.

As a lover of rusty bits, I was like a kid in a candy store, snapping all sorts of interesting photos, a few of which are below.

Those are some cool pictures. That drill press is ridiculously huge! How long have you guys lived in Portland now? Man, does time fly.

By the way the kerosene heater is working pretty good. The smell that I was complaining about earlier was actually the diesel that was left over from when my Dad was using it. The kerosene is not nearly as bad. I have heard recently the they even make some that is odorless. It works great, I can heat up the entire shop in about fifteen minutes. You should get one and stop being such a woos! It is probably not that cold out there any way.

Can you take a picture of the heater? How quickly does it get emptied? I wonder where you get one … that is a good idea. I am still worried about glue setting up - I have had problems with too-cold glue in the past.

Oh, and we moved to Portland in the summer of 2001. Almost 6 years ago now. Time flies … you guys need to get out here soon.
