Our 1923 house came with a bathroom in the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/axoplasm/2170204871/" rel="nofollow">attic closet</a> ... shelves right next to the fixtures, on a false floor, which is carpeted natch. Also: ungrounded plugs directly below the drain! There's a single bolt holding each fixture to the floor. One good shove and I could probably knock the sink and toilet over. So very very far away from standard building code. We have so much sub-sub-sub-par "owner-completed" work in our house that we've basically decided it's not worth it to even try ... to bring any work up to code would essentially mean gutting the whle thing and starting over.
