The Concept

The Concept

My first show of a two part series was on October 24th and second is going to be November 21st.

I recently returned from South Africa and the beauty and reality of such a distant land opened my eyes to the world around me. Once I was back home I started to observe things from a different mind set and began to question what I was going to do next. At this transitional point in my life I decided that I would like to take my art to a different level of dedication.

The concept is that during the entire month between the two shows I will not spend, receive or have any type of money interaction. Instead I will dedicate myself completely to my art and drawings. It will be a time of contemplation and interacting with people free of monetary evalution. In order to sustain myself I will give my drawings to anyone in exchange for food and conversation. There is difficulty in escaping the far reaching blanket of spending and receiving, it effects almost every aspect of our lives. Sometimes it is taken too far and we forget about the things around us that are the most important. What I would like to communicate through this idea is not that we should stop spending money but rather the possibility that we can think and create without it. The drawings will be a numbered series with a story behind each one, inspired by the beauty that surrounds us all. The whole experience is going to be documented and presented in a film that will be played at the second show.

I like your concept a lot, most of all your dedication to it. Will there be story text accompanying the drawings in your second show? I am excited to see the film, too.

I had a meeting at work today where a new hire was announced. She will be working only Monday through Thursday, and the President of the company said others could work on a similar schedule if they desired … I’m considering doing that very thing after the New Year – my resolution to spend more time doing art. I think I will get up at the same time as I would normally, but instead spend the day drawing or painting or what have you. If I am serious about grad school, I need to have a bigger body of work for my application, but more than that, I think I need to take this part of my life equally serious.
