Knife Block by Irene van Gestel

This lime-wood sculpture reminded me of that head you carved in college, Gabe. Only with knives sticking out of it.

In other knife-related news, my adze and crooked knives arrived yesterday. I’d had a few drinks before I got home, so I haven’t tried them out yet. Tonight’s the night, though!

How did the knives work out?

My wrist is so sore I can barely mouse! Okay, maybe not that sore, but you use very different muscles with the knives than you would with a flexcut or similar. The blades are thicker and don’t seem to make quite as fine a cut. They do remove material more quickly, though.

I’m still figuring out the adze. I tried it on a piece of firewood as recommended and made some pretty good headway, though I don’t feel as though I’m doing it right. This is just a sense, since I don’t have any experience with this kind of tool.

I just had to keep reminding myself that you don’t just pick up a tool and get going very often, that there is almost always a learning curve of some kind. I think it will take awhile before I feel totally familiar with either the knives or the adze.

I also have the distinct feeling these are tools designed for larger works than I have been doing until now, which is kind of a good thing.
