Watermill published in a science textbook

Published on October 5, 2007

A few months ago a publisher in Singapore contacted DA asking if they could use a picture of the watermill they found on this blog. We thought it would be cool as long a they credited Descending Ashtray. So today in the mail I received a copy of the textbook that they published.

New Easel

I have been working on a new easel design that has a sliding hand rest. The top and bottom guides are both adjustable to the size of the canvas. And it also tilts forward and back to get the right angle.

The wing nuts make it easy to adjust and I dadoed out the slots on the back supports so that it would slide on track.

This is a close up of the rollers at the top of the hand rest. It works pretty smooth.
Over all I am happy with how it turned out. It is very functional and made for a fraction of the cost of buying a new one from the Art store.

I finally read this book. When Dave and I were working on our collaborative sculpture he reminded me of this book by Kurt Vonnegut. Dave had given me a copy of it six years ago and signed the front of it with his 5×5. It was a good read about an artist who had all of the paint fall of his canvas’s. Worth checking and also inspiring in a humerous sort of way.

Kinetic Sculptures in Santa Fe

Published on May 24, 2007

This is a clip of some kinetic sculptures that I thought were pretty interesting. They were installed in the court yard of a Catholic Church. The wind was blowing fairly strong, so they really were moving good. The artist is Mark White.

Return from the Southwest

I recently returned from my trip through New Mexico, Arizona and Southern Utah. It was pretty amazing! Beautiful landscapes across vast expanses.

Last Wednesday I went through Santa Fe and saw many interesting galleries. On Canyon Road the are over 200 galleries alone. Here are few pictures of work that I saw there.

Here are some trophies that I made for Bike to Work Week. They were pretty fun to make. I felt like I was welding with wood glue while making the frames. The bikes do not actually function. I thought about it but that would have taken way too much time!
