Day 21

Published on November 14, 2005

Today marks the third week into my project, one week to go. My focus up until the second show is going to be getting the film edited and presentable. What things do you think are the most interesting about what I am doing? I think that there are three main reasons behind this concept:

1. Simply to help motivate myself to do more. I find that I am more inspired when I am around and interacting with other people. It is not nescassarily about me becoming better at landscapes, I am interested in what would happen I dedicated all of my time to the development of art. Frightening it is, not having a source of income but that just gives the work that much more meaning.

2. Having spent so much time on the farm, my social anxiety has really surfaced. The reentering into the city from the farm has been hard for me to deal with. But I have found the more social exposure I have with other people (espeicially new situations) the less anxiety I feel. Bardering my drawings for dinner has been a good way for me to break down my fears of social awkwardness.

3. To bring awareness to how much we let the spending and receiving of money control almost every aspect of our lives. We can think and create without it. The more that we minimize financial importance in our lives the better we will become as human beings. We need to stop spending on excess and starting living within the people and beauty around us.

Can we make a conceptual art category?

Check out this stool, it reminds me of a warped 5×5.

Day 19

Published on

The weather has been beautiful for the past few weeks since I started this project. 70 was the high yesterday and I did another drawing at Waveland. It is nice to draw beautiful landscapes but I almost feel that I am spending too much time trying to find the right place. I am starting to become more interested in documenting my life as I live it through my art. By refining and perfecting every detail it seems as if I am filtering out only what I want to show. So the new object (if there is one) is to bring my life closer to my art or bring my art closer to my life.

Junction Carving

Basswood, roughed out with table saw, drill press and router, approx. 5 in. tall. Really just another study for 2 larger versions I am working on (in plaster, and in pine). I didn’t realize how many studies I’ve been doing for this project. It had better be good when I’m all done.

A watercolor study I did. Interestingly, I did the pencil schematic first, then the carving (see next post), then did the painting portion of this from the carving.
